PUBLISHER'S CORNER

We had a fun night out at Keys Piano Bar last night for their dueling pianos show. I've been meaning to check it out but life's been pulling me around by the collar of late.

It was my sister's next-to-last night in New Hampshire and the idea appealed to her musical sensibilities. We had a tasty dinner before the show began and a few drinks to get us through the sing-along, which was a hit.

And not just for us.

I was kind of amazed at how many people came to sing and have a good time, putting in requests and feeling connected to everyone else in the joint. We sang-along to songs from John Denver to Metallica and everything in between.

Early on, one of the two piano players announced that it was "Val's" birthday and she was going to "spin the wheel," which determines your fate. Turns out Val was destined to start a conga line and the rest of us were encouraged to join, so my sister and I did, and were happy to be part of the spectacle.

If you like music and other people and don't take yourself too seriously, you might like it. Pro tip: Don't forget to bring some cash for tipping - it will get your request played sooner.

Addressing the heightened urgency of New Hampshire’s homelessness crisis

The median cost for a two-bedroom apartment in New Hampshire is about $1,584. To afford it, someone would have to earn about $31 an hour. With the minimum wage at  $7.25 an hour, someone working 168 hours a week — every hour of every day — could not afford the rent. To kick off an occasional series on homelessness, Melanie Plenda talks with Jennifer Chisholm, executive director of the New Hampshire Coalition to End Homelessness, about the problems and solutions related to homelessness in New Hampshire.

Sometimes it rains

MANCHESTER, NH – At the end of Ron Shelton’s 1988 baseball movie classic “Bull Durham,” pitcher Ebby Calvin “Nuke” Laloosh—the organization’s top prospect, a vacuous kid equally propelled by a thunderbolt right arm and his crotch—is called up to big leagues and being interviewed by a reporter. Played by a young Tim Robbins, LaLoosh delivers a tidbit of baseball/life advice that …
