PUBLISHER'S CORNER

I'm a smiler. When I approach strangers in passing I smile at them - and I do it because I think it's important to meet humanity with joy and kindness, whenever possible.

I'm also gullible and a bit of a pollyanna. That's my choice. Yesterday as I made my way through a parking lot there were two men walking toward me. I was prepared to slay them with my smile of human kindness but they weren't looking my way. I overheard a snippet of their conversation. It ruined my day.

"We have to find a way to destroy the mainstream media..." Then, I saw his red baseball hat with the white lettering. Then, I realized my smile would not make their day.

I couldn't shake it. It hurt me. I don't consider myself the "mainstream media" but I am the media.

As a journalist I feel offended by those who paint us with a big and negative brush. For 10 years Andy Sylvia and I have worked diligently to report on this community for Manchester Ink Link. We are the media. We are your media. We are overworked and underpaid. We are at all times burned out and running on empty. That's our choice. We persist because our mission - to serve this community - and our work ethic - which demands that we respond to the daily needs of our community - keep us working late into the night and up again, early in the morning.

Those two men walking through the parking lot - their minds have been poisoned by rhetoric. They are biased against a noble profession based on their politics and negativity.

This isn't how it's supposed to be. This isn't good for any of us. Where is trust? Where is community? Where is our ability to agree to disagree without despising those who have a differing point of view?

I would like to believe those men are the exception, and not the rule.

The Soapbox: On homelessnes, seeking solutions is needed instead of seeking blame
For decades, I have been involved with many other advocates in efforts to end homelessness in NH and worked for many years in agencies involved with housing and low-income people. I  grew up in and have worked in Manchester. I have also worked all over the state including Nashua, where I live now. Since homelessness is caused by multiple economic, social, and health-related factors, it is not easy to find effective solutions.
