PUBLISHER'S CORNER

Yesterday's downtown Trick-or-Treating was a hit. Kids - and adults - in costume circulated like candy machines and showed off their alter-egos. Lots of Spidermen, including the kid above who at that moment was having as much fun running and jumping into the piles of crunchy leaves as he did collecting fun-sized treats.

This particular holiday ritual is relatable across time - my own dearly departed dad used to tell tales of his joyful boyhood Halloween, and he was born nearly a century ago.

I was out on the street when Judi Window of Diz's Cafe mentioned she was down by two staffers and her place was packed. "I can man your candy," I said, giving her freedom to pitch in with the hungry masses.

It was a good call. What a treat for me. Of course, the variety of costumes were fantastical - and many of them were beyond my ability to guess, like characters from The Descendents and "Five Nights at Freddy's," which I would never have figured out on my own.

Mayor Ruais was wearing a West High School football jersey to encourage people to vote for the team (they are in the running for $2 million from T-Mobile).

All in all, it was another affirmation that tradition + enthusiasm = magic. Here's a short video that almost begins to capture the moment.

It was just another Friday night on Brennan Street - if the sight of a bear does not strike you as unusual. But for Guy Lessard, it was a first after more than half a century of city living.

A lapsed Catholic’s list of horror films to avoid
I’m talking, of course, about demonic possession. If a character is possessed by a demonic spirit, I’m out. If a ouija board is in any way part of the mise en scène, I’m also out. Demonic possession is a surefire way to freak out a Catholic—even a lapsed-Catholic, like me.
