PUBLISHER'S CORNER

I've got a bird story for you in two parts. Part one comes via Assistant Editor Andrew Sylvia, who sent me the above photos yesterday, along with this:

"I am currently at the Starbucks in Hudson and I was outside and saw what looked like an injured bird. It looked like he could only move his head. Called animal control here in Hudson, he gave me the name of a bird rehabber woman named Maria (603-428-3723). Maria said to give him a box and give him an hour - maybe he was just stunned and he'd fly away. Then a vet tech walked in to get some coffee and offers to help. She goes toward the bird and he flies out of the box. I didn't see it, but we all assumed the bird just flew into the window and was trying to get his bearings back down there on the sidewalk."

That was a happy ending. And I knew who he was referring to - Maria Colby of Wings of Dawn Wild Animal Rescue in Henniker, who is known for her way with injured creatures and healing sanctuary.

As for disoriented birds, I've seen it before, which brings me to part 2. Oddly, I had just had my own bird-into-a-window encounter just hours before Andy's, that didn't end as well.

I was hanging out with Bella and Luna over morning coffee on Friday when we all heard a loud thud. The cats ran to the sliding doors and, without looking, I knew it was a bird. I grabbed a tea towel and went outside to scoop up the poor little thing. It was clearly not going to recover.

Although it's happened a few times before it usually goes like it went at Starbucks. The bird is laid out by a collision with the glass and usually just need a 10-count before they recover and get back to bird business. A quick Google search informed me that especially this time of year, when birds are migrating, they can mistake a reflection in a window for something more welcoming, like blue sky, or trees. Millions of birds are killed annually from window strikes.

That factoid reminded me of when I was a kid and people were told to put stickers on sliding glass doors to keep kids from conking their noggins on them. I immediately ordered some reflective stickers to put on my window. I picked star shapes that will cast rainbows in the sun. They are due to arrive today.

I hope the Hudson Starbucks will consider window clings, too. Maybe everyone should!

Shiny rainbows for the win!

As the Director of a Senior Center in New Hampshire, I saw firsthand the burden of high prescription drug prices on our members. Many shared with me how they had to go without medication because they couldn’t afford the price tag. Often, tragically, this resulted in serious medical problems or hospital stays.

The charter revision was never adopted, but the city’s Board of Mayor and Alderman did subsequently approve a long-overdue salary bump for the person who captured the mayoralty in 2023, a bit of nuance the Ayotte campaign fails to note in its TV spot, thereby intentionally creating the false impression that Craig was feathering her own nest despite never receiving a raise as mayor.
