Fifty years ago Nixon ruined politics for me. I was only 14, but watching the President of the United States on television resign in a cloud of controversy I hardly understood at the time soured me on all of it.
It took me years before I could bring myself to participate on Election Day. Over time I came around. I waded through my feelings about the true nature of politics and understood the assignment, as an American citizen.
I also must admit that I am still a skeptic. I want to believe that there are politicians seeking office who want to make the world a better place for all of us, but in my experience they are few and far between.
Maybe my expectations are too high. Maybe I'm too idealistic. Maybe the system is flawed because we humans are flawed and we can't bring ourselves to admit that we need to overhaul everything. Fresh start. Tabula rasa, as my college philosophy teacher would say.
What we've got is an Election Day with two candidates, one of which will be our next president.
Today I am voting because it's my duty. I urge you to do the same - not because of who might prevails, but because of who we are, you and me, and the kind of world we are working hard to create.
Or as Richard Nixon once said, “We must always remember that America is a great nation today not because of what government did for people but because of what people did for themselves and for one another.”
See you on the other side.

During West High’s lunch periods on Tuesday, a steady flow of students made their way toward voting booths set up by the City Clerk. Some may have been drawn in by the spectacle of the red and blue cloth voting booths and promise of a free Tootsie Roll, but most approached with a plan in mind: To cast a ballot in the school’s mock election.
