PUBLISHER'S CORNER
ABOVE: Andrew Morse, the publisher and chief executive of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, using a wall mural to advertise this quest to save the storied newspaper.
I was reading this NPR article about saving journalism, saving the news business, recreating a modern newsroom with an eye on the future, and the shifting role of those at the top. In this case, it's Andrew Morse, who is approaching leadership at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution a little differently than he did when he was executive VP of CNN. The story's headline caught my attention:
Local news is in crisis. This paper has a $150 million plan.
The first part is clear to me, and I hope by now it's clear to you, also, that I only exist because I believe local news matters. The second part - the $150 million plan, less so.
You see, everything Morse says he aims to do with his big pile of money we're already doing - except I don't have a corporate entity paying me to make sweeping changes. I have spent 10 years incrementally moving the needle and showing readers there are new and different ways of approaching news in a community like ours. I don't know what real experience he hs in the local news trenches as a publisher, but if he wants advice, I'm here for him.
Could I use a $150 million boost? A bigger staff of journalists? More help? Oh sure, who couldn't?
For now I will just ask that you stick with me here. Tell your friends to sign up for our newsletter. I probably won't paint it on a wall but, like Morse in Atlanta, we at the Ink Link are here for you - and we're determined to stick around.
