PUBLISHER'S CORNER

Newsweek has just published a handy map that ranks the 50 states from most friendly to least. As you can see New Hampshire could be friendlier. As with all such rating systems, you have to consider the source - in this case it's a publication called World Population Review that collects all sorts of data.

This map is supposed to show where tourists and residents can experience "warm interactions within highly hospitable communities."

The barometer by which a state is measured includes how much community spirit, great hospitality, and everlasting memories a visitor comes away with.

New Hampshire is No. 44. Minnesota is No. 1 and New York is dead last.

You can draw your own conclusions - about the map and the ranking. As for me, I'm questioning the quality of the tourists who did the ranking.

The Soapbox: We need policy change to bring back affordable housing

Renting in Manchester is often stressful. Too many of our friends and neighbors are wracked by the uncertainty of whether they’ll be able to remain in the community for another year, while trying to keep up with increasing rent costs, which are a direct result of the lack of homes here in Manchester and the surrounding towns. The shortage of attainable housing options for working folks is a policy choice - a choice that has forced young families who grew up here to move away, kept too many stuck in housing situations they cannot afford, and prevented young adults from growing up and moving out.
