PUBLISHER'S CORNER

I appreciate my readers. They get me.

For instance Karl sent me a photo yesterday of myself with my cat, Luna, reinforcing my "cat lady" status in light of recent controversy over the GOP vice presidential nominee's comment from a few years ago that resurfaced now that he's in the spotlight.

The comment: That the country was being run by "a bunch of childless cat ladies who are miserable at their own lives and the choices that they've made and so they want to make the rest of the country miserable, too."

I do love me some cats.

And you could say I am childless in the sense that I wake up every day with only cats to talk to (counting my hubby, as he's a Leo by astrological birth - nature's king of the cat jungle).

However, my four children disqualify me as a classic cat lady. And I don't think I'm making anyone miserable - even on my bad days.

But while we're on the subject, who we love shouldn't define us. For the record - while my love of cats is something I don't hide - I have also loved dogs with equal enthusiasm; cats are less demanding and fit my lifestyle better at this stage of life, that's all. But I don't think it's fair to say that cat lovers are the only ones among us who have the potential for misery; or that there is some relationship between cat affection and suffering. I know plenty of dog lovers who could use a therapist.

Also, I would have to add to all of this that the modern "crazy cat lady" is not a liberal politician, as the aspiring Veep suggested, but rather more like a jaded millennial. Some analysts say that for this younger generation - left questioning all sorts of human rituals - plants are a substitute for pets and pets qualify as a better option, as caregivers, than children.

I can't disagree. For one thing the shelf life of both plants and pets is relatively brief; kids are there for your entire life to remind you of all the mistakes you made; pets are comparatively forgiving; as long as you fill their bowl once or twice a day, they remain loyal.

And it also is fair to say that If more of us learned how to take care of plants and animals - and understood first-hand the consequences of neglect - there would probably be less human suffering in the world.

I could go on but my cats are giving me the look - it's time for their hourly treats.

Are they 'real' or are they a tribute band? We love 'em both!

For us, one of the factors is that we often spend more time leaving a venue than we spend being entertained. Too much hassle at our age.  So we have added tribute bands to our concert-going ventures.
