PUBLISHER'S CORNER

My sister and I did not inherit the familiy athletic gene.

But we did play some fairly competitive badminton in our younger days. That, and croquet. And bowling. That was our lane.

I figured badminton was standard issue in the 1960s suburbs. The "birdie" couldn't fly far from where you were playing and couldn't do any damage to windows or stationwagons. On a good day I'm gonna say we might have "volleyed" four or five times, tops. Plus, it was just fun enough to keep us playing for a while, but frustrating enough to eventually give up, leaving a freestanding net with no real purpose in the backyard for most of the summer.

No matter what misty memories I conjure up about my badminton pat, it barely resembles the Olympic version, which I caught a little bit of yesterday. NBC news called it a "riveting" exchange betwen China and USA, which isn't a word anyone had ever used in my world to describe a game of badminton. But I will say that it almost makes me want to challenge my sister to a rematch. Almost.

You can see the action here.
