PUBLISHER'S CORNER

I was oddly excited to catch Olympic "breaking" last night and I'm here for it. I've seen some people say it shouldn't be in the Olympics. I say, after watching, that it's big fun. If you missed it, I would say it's like if the gymnasts did their floor routines at the same time, going tumbling pass for tumbling pass, challenging one another with in-your-face triple tuck back flips and sort of giving attitude while they were at it. And also, if the gymnasts were Eminem and Kool Moe Dee performing on Wild and Out. Also, they do what they do to music selected randomly, so it's not choreographed.

It's among the "new" events that, like Snoop Dogg and Martha Stewart, makes us smile while scratching our heads because it's a crazy combination that happens to work.

This got me thinking about other Olympic events that are no more, which I did a little research on and of which I will remind you of over the next few days.

First up: Olympic club swinging - a gymnastics discipline in which objects not unlike bowling pins would be whirled around the head and body in a specific pattern - think about the way the guys swing their legs around the hobby horse. I think it is similar in spirit but evolved into something more like rhythmic gymnastics.

Club swinging was included in the Olympics only twice: 1904 and 1932.
