I've said it before and I'll say it lots more times - the world is magical. Learning that there is star-shaped sand in Japan just reinforces that for me.
|
Stars are my thing, and so I'm always excited to find that not only are we surrounded by stars and made of stardust, but that we can walk on the stars, too.
|
“Star sand is an empty shell of unicellular microorganisms called Foraminifera,” ‪Kazuhiko Fujita, a professor at the University of the Ryukyus, told National Geographic. “It looks like a star in a cartoon… It has a rounded body with five or more spines like a sea star.”
|
The Ryukyu Islands of Japan are made up of the skeletons of these microorganisms. And while that might sound a little dark, I think it's fantastical.

Once built and operational the lab will have a staff of more than 50 and the DEA expects to process more than 5,000 drug exhibits a year. The lab will provide forensic analysis for drug investigations for the entire DEA New England Field Division covering New Hampshire, Maine, Vermont, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and upstate New York. Regional laboratories process evidence for the DEA, FBI, ATF, DHS, and state and local agencies.
