PUBLISHER'S CORNER

For the Ink Link's 10th anniversary Mayor Jay Ruais issued a proclamation, which begins:
Whereas freedom of the press is a pillar of the First Amendment, and whereas open government is enshrined in the NH constitution, and where as coverage of the local government by the press is essential to developing informed citizens...

I appreciate that the city recognizes the essential role of the media in our community. It hasn't been without challenges for us, especially in the past several weeks. Regular readers of the Ink Link already know that we are here for all of it - and while we lean into positive news and solutions journalism we don't shy away from the other stories - of note, stories that call into question actions by elected and appointed public officials. Some of our recent coverage has resulted in negative feedback - from readers via social media and directly from a couple of local businesses that said they would not support us as an advertising partner because the police patronize their business and they didn't like our coverage of, (1) an incident captured by a resident on video of several officers telling a homeless man that they would play "manhunt" with him - and ultimately arrest him if they found him; and (2) a weekend story about actions taken by the chief of police following a public comment made at a meeting.

I bring this up because yesterday was Democracy Day.

One of the main functions of a free press is to make sure citizens are informed, that free speech in public spaces is allowed, and that all government officials operate in a transparent and honorable manner that reflects the gravity of their position. We are here for the festivals and the grand openings, the ribbon cuttings and the graduations, the courtroom victories and the election process. We are here to respond to readers' concerns, do the leg work and produce coverage you can trust. We will ask the tough questions and try to get you answers.

We will keep doing this for as long as our community supports our efforts. If you disagree with something we've done in our effort to cover the community, by all means speak up about it. If you appreciate what we've done, we love to hear that as well.

For us, every day is Democracy Day, and we hope that you will continue to do your part: Read the news, support our work, vote on election day, raise your voice for the things you believe are important.

In 50 days, we will be heading to the polls to choose a new President and Vice-President, as well as members of the House, and in some states Senators, and in states like New Hampshire, Governor, Executive Council, State Representatives, State Senators, and County offices. It is often said that “this election is the most important of our lifetime,” to which I usually laugh, but believe that this one may be because our choices represent two very different directions for our state and country.

Wrongful death lawsuit filed against NH DHHS, DCYF by Harmony Montgomery's mother

“We are going to hold the State of New Hampshire accountable for Harmony’s senseless and preventable death, shine a light on the systemic failures in her case to prevent future tragedies, give Harmony the voice that she never had, and get Harmony the justice that she so deeply deserves.  Too many vulnerable children are being injured and killed while under the watchful eye of the State, it has been happening for way too long, and something needs to be done to stop it - enough is enough."
