PUBLISHER'S CORNER

I've said it before and I'm about to say it again: Jimmy Carter is the epitome of an American president.

I didn't say greatest. By most measures he was meh. But this is why I always respected him: He wasn't born a millionaire, wasn't a career politician. He served in the military - but he didn't make a career of it. He served one term in the White House and did the best he could to manage inflation, an energy crisis, war in Afghanistan, and hostages in Iran while there.

When he left office, his popularity rating couldn't have been much lower. But he kept moving, kept growing. He built houses for those in need.

Yesterday was his 100th birthday, an incredible milestone most of us hope to celebrate in relative health. He's been in hospice care for over a year and a half. It was the first birthday in 77 years that he celebrated without his wife Rosalynn, who died last November, by his side.

He and his wife established The Carter Center. Look it up. It's pretty cool. They're tagline is "Waging Peace. Fighting Disease. Building Hope. It's hard to argue with that mission, or the many accomplishments of the organization.

Happy birthday to the son of a peanut farmer and a nurse who grew up to be a president - and then went on to make the world a better place.
