PUBLISHER'S CORNER

Stumbled upon another interesting documentary on the Disney+ Channel - maybe you saw it since it's been floating around for the past seven years, but somehow National Geographic's "One Strange Rock" escaped me. If you love science and nature and incredibly detailed and gorgeous video footage of impossible things then you'll be fascinated, like we were.

I learned about natives in Russia who have a dance marathon when the salmon spawn; how parrot fish poop enough tons of sand from eating coral to create islands, and the flying river above the Amazon forest. And we still have like four episodes to go.

I also figured out why Elon Musk is intent on SpaceX and all the other rich guys are so busy trying to get to Mars - because the group of astronauts who helped actor Will Smith narrate explain that our days herr on this "strange rock" are numbered.

But it wasn't scary; just matter of fact – and educational. Made me want to understand more about ecosystems and how everything relies on everything else for survival. It reinforced my personal favorite truth, that we are stardust and because we're all made of carbon - as is every other living thing on earth, we have to understand how to keep things in balance because we need each other.

These scientists are looking out for the generations to come.

As many times as I've celebrated Earth Day or recycled egg cartons, I operate on a fairly selfish human premise which involves my own survial. I have no idea how to preserve and care for the planet properly. Which is why I'm glad there are smart people out there who are on the case.

If you don't have the Disney Channel there are other places to watch. I think you'll learn some things, too.

A trilogy for Rob

A trilogy for Rob

But Rob? Rob’s earned something special as we near the end of this trip. A poetic salute. An accolade. And this? I’ve written two different versions, each of which fails in different ways. The third version, at the end, is the only one worth a warm pitcher of spit.

New Hampshire’s Median Household Income increased in 2023, poverty remained steady

New data released by the U.S. Census Bureau provide key insights into the economic well-being of Granite Staters. The American Community Survey’s 2023 state-level data showed that median household income recovered to 2021 levels after adjusting for inflation, following a decline in 2022. While the median household income increased, the poverty rate held steady at 7.2 percent, reflecting that nearly 100,000 New Hampshire residents had very little income despite purchasing power growing for the median household.

The Czar's Brewery in Exeter - Paying My Respects to Russian Royalty

Of all the places I've visited for this column, this one felt the most yet like a second home, conjuring the Cheers theme song line "where everybody knows your name." While I was there I heard the bartenders greet many clients by name.
