The June 1 football game between the Maine Mayhem and New Hampshire Rebellion started with an unusual twist: a Rebellion interception led to points by Mayhem. An interception at 12:15 in the first quarter by Cassie Healy led to Rebellion having the ball backed up close to their own end zone. A running play went nowhere, leading to a Maine safety.
It was a game of firsts for both teams. Both the Ambush and Rebellion had players playing their first game. Both head coaches for each team was coaching their first game for their team. For the Rebellion, a crowd filtered in, many of whom stayed until the game ended. It was also the first Rebellion game in which a camera drone hovered overhead, recording the action between the two teams. Interest in the team had increased since last year, when the Rebellion won their home opener with almost no crowd in attendance.
The New Hampshire Rebellion women’s football team opens its season this coming Saturday against the Delaware Diamonds.
Catch the NH Rebellion April 27 as they play the Delaware Diamonds. Game starts at 4:30 p.m. at the West High School Field on Jack Amero Way, rain or shine. Admission will be free.
Missy Mahoney has been playing women’s football for two years. Prior to joining the NH Rebellion, Mahoney was an ardent flag football player. A regular at every practice, Mahoney most often plays linebacker, though sometimes lines up at tight end. She will turn 38 on April 17.
Members of the New Hampshire Rebellion, a female football team with a home stadium in Manchester, gathered at their regular practice field in Tyngsborough, Mass., this past Saturday for the Women’s Football Alliance (WFA) National Open Tryout Day. Fresh and familiar faces were in attendance. Absent from the field were ducks and turkeys that sometimes wander in from a nearby forest.
The Mayhem scored early and often in what would turn out to be a one-sided affair. They jumped up by 19-0 at the end of the first quarter. They would add on another touchdown to increase their lead to 25 at halftime. The final score ended up being Maine Mayhem 45, New Hampshire Rebellion 0.
Despite these various difficulties, members of the NH Rebellion came to 456 Union St. at the 1269 Cafe to volunteer their time on a Sunday. They showed up as early as 9:30 a.m. to serve breakfast to some of Manchester’s homeless individuals.
The team faces no less of a significant challenge this Saturday at 5 p.m. when they take the home field at Gill Stadium against the New York Knockout, which is undefeated this year. Two of the Knockout’s wins have been blowouts.
