City and state government officials and veterans took turns giving speeches honoring veterans—their words at times lost to the meek microphone battling valiantly with the wind and construction— to a modestly sizable crowd. Manchester’s West High School band played the Star-Spangled Banner at the beginning of the ceremony and Taps at the end. A Girl Scout troop led the crowd in the Pledge of Allegiance. A local priest offered a prayer to open the ceremony and a  benediction to close.

Dropped off at an abandoned baseball clubhouse on a scorching hot day clueless on what to do and where to go. Cigarette butts and trash littering the potential beauty this place can offer. Blindlessly wandering around the building, soon to follow a purple-haired lady inside who I had recognized from before, just to see how the place was littered in scrap and timeless relics dating back to 30 years ago.

As we near the end of our project, I feel excited. I can’t wait to see our mural finished, but I know this journey is coming to an end. I will treasure the lessons I have learned, and the memories we have created together as teammates. This internship has been more than just a job.  This journey hasn’t been easy, especially with the hot weather, rainy days  and cold days. We did a lot  of things to get where we are today.

Those marks don’t go away. They ebb and flow, as they did for me, until Little Bean came along. The difference, as she begins her own musical journey, is that she doesn’t have to make this trip alone. This adventure can be ours, if that’s what she wants.
