Today, the addict faces not just opiates — chemicals derived from poppies — but opioids —synthetic and much more powerful versions of the drugs of days gone by.
The closest that I can come to is imagine holding your breath and screaming at yourself not to take a breath – I mean really scream at yourself not to take a breath and your body is saying to take that breath. It just is, it’s a fight, flight survival instinct – and that’s what happens in active addiction.
It is with great sadness I write this letter to you. The hearts of those within my family, our close friends, and our New Hampshire community are broken. Just over a week ago, our family lost a son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin – and someone who was friends to many.

The War on Drugs is creating and ensuring addiction, not preventing it. The very people that the system purports to help only become further entangled in their trauma and misery. Time to call a ceasefire.
The people that want to see this bill pass are parents of drug users who are desperate to keep their children alive one more day, in the hopes that a bed will open up at a treatment center, or the next paycheck will cover treatment. May they be granted the right to keep their children alive one more day, in the interest of a better tomorrow?
