The Dreary Tyranny of ‘Happy Holiday’
read more…: The Dreary Tyranny of ‘Happy Holiday’There is no easy way to break the news to a world too busy with all the frenetic activity that causes us to “lay waste our powers, getting and spending,” as the immortal Wordsworth so eloquently put it. But even for those of us who try to follow a more spiritual bent, “The World is Too Much With Us.”
Wrapping my head around 2019, and looking ahead with 2020 vision
read more…: Wrapping my head around 2019, and looking ahead with 2020 visionAnd today, as I sit at my desk awaiting my new desk calendar, clothed like an Eskimo, I look to 2020 and I see my 50th birthday approaching around the bend and I plan to paint the squares of the New Year like a graffiti artist might a bare wall at midnight, marking up the hours of my days and nights.

Letters: Relapse is Part of the Addiction, NOT Part of the Recovery
read more…: Letters: Relapse is Part of the Addiction, NOT Part of the RecoveryNo, what really and truly galls and angers me is a single sentence, used as the headline for the piece: “What is critical for our community to understand is that relapse is part of the recovery process.” No, my friends, that is exactly what we in the recovery community know to be false, misleading, and potentially fatal for anyone who puts it into practice.
The Governor’s Reckless Comments
read more…: The Governor’s Reckless CommentsThe Governor’s plan, which he announced in conjunction with Democrats on October 30 of this year, is shored up by two LSRs (HB 1629 and HB 1632). One bill would make zoning for low-income or high-density housing mandatory while forcing zoning and planning boards to accept training in the philosophy of “new urbanism” — an internationally-bred fad that has invaded the country. Life off the Rails: Be a Blessing to Others
read more…: Life off the Rails: Be a Blessing to OthersNovember was a horrendous month for me. My mom died suddenly on Veteran’s Day – 89 years old with Alzheimer’s but otherwise stable health. Expected eventually but a numbing shock all the same. My dad followed three days later, some random point in his long, slow, steady decline.
