Most streams are running at or well above normal for this time of year and lake levels are likely at maximum. The rains seem to have turned on the fish so now is a good time to get out there.
We are in the mandatory catch-and-release season for bass (May 15 – June 15), and fish are cruising the shallows looking for mates or are on beds already.
If you’re planning an early morning fishing or snowmobile trip for Jan. 14, note that you’ll have to wait until after 8 a.m. to buy your license or register your snowmobile that day.

Conservation Officers responded to the police department and documented the incident in which Daniel Hebert, 51, of Merrimack, was hunting rabbits off of Hazen Road in Whitefield when he was shot inadvertently by 52 year old Dan Sterling of Bedford, who was in the same hunting party.
NH Fish & Game conservation officers were called on over the weekend for a series of rescues, one of them involving a snowmobiler from Rhode Island who apparently died after striking a tree, and the discovery Feb. 28 of a deceased hiker on Castle Ravine Trail in Randolph.
Fish and Game Officials would like to use this incident as a reminder to those recreating on frozen water bodies of the dangers associated with ice. This year’s inconsistent weather patterns have made ice conditions vary more than usual, even up in the northern parts of the state.
The Fish and Game Commission is proposing to issue a total of 50 bobcat permits through a lottery process. The draft season would be similar to New Hampshire’s fisher season, with December trapping and January hunting. The proposal would take effect in December of 2016.
Alcohol, thin ice and lack of snow were cited by New Hampshire Fish & Game officers as contributing to two unrelated snowmobile accidents over he weekend.
