State steps up drug crisis intervention with substance abuse grants for at-risk communities

MANCHESTER โ€“ Governor Maggie Hassan will join Department of Safety Commissioner John Barthelmes, Attorney General Joe Foster, Manchester Police Chief Nick Willard and other local officials Oct. 1 to announce two state substance abuse grants that will help support efforts to combat the heroin and opioid crisis in high-risk communities like Manchester.

To strengthen the stateโ€™s efforts to combat the heroin and opioid crisis, Governor Hassan has focused on a comprehensive approach, including working to increase treatment capacity through the reauthorization of the bipartisan New Hampshire Health Protection Program, strengthening provider training, updating prescriber practices and increasing the safe and effective use of Narcan.

The Governor will begin the day at the Deerfield Fair Opening Ceremony at 9 a.m., celebrating the important economic and cultural contributions that the fair makes to the Granite State and presenting the stateโ€™s Columbus Day tourism forecast. Throughout the day, Governor Hassan will participate in events to highlight the role entrepreneurship and startups play in boosting New Hampshireโ€™s economy, including two Rise of the Rest events and the UNH Innovators Dinner.
