CONCORD, NH — Overnight weather conditions contributed to a temporary shut-down of I-89, after more than a dozen accidents late Friday night that left several people with minor injuries, according to State Police.
On Feb. 19 at 10 p.m., Troopers from Troop D, Lebanon and Enfield Police Departments, responded to Interstate 89 northbound between Exit 15 and Exit 17 for a reported number of motor vehicle crashes resulting in the northbound I-89 corridor to be shut down for approximately two hours.
A Snow squall and freezing temperatures resulted in a dramatic and quick deterioration of the road surface, police said. Simultaneously the State Police began receiving calls of multiple vehicle crashes in the area. One of the vehicles involved was an ambulance, which was struck by another vehicle. There was at least one rollover crash reported.
There were approximately 10-14 vehicle crashes in the area. Only minor injuries were reported. Several individuals were transported to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. A number of drivers were issued summonses for driving too fast for the conditions, which were determined to be causal factors in the crashes.
The road surfaces were treated by the NH Department of Transportation, working in conjunction with the state Police, emergency services and towing agencies to clear and open the roadway.
Assisting with the crashes were Lebanon Police, Enfield Police, Lebanon Fire Department and Lebanon Ambulance.
The New Hampshire State Police, local law enforcement and the NH DOT continue to urge motorist to heed winter advisory warnings, plan ahead, reduce speed and give a wide birth to emergency vehicles, tow companies and plow trucks while they are working in inclement weather events to assist the motoring public and treat the roadways.
