CONCORD, NH – A bill for family and medical leave insurance, HB 628, was defeated by the state senate Finance Committee on April 18. The House passed the bill in January with strong bipartisan support. Governor Chris Sununu had pledged to support the bill during his campaign, but has turned against it this month.
“HB 628 would effectively create an income tax, which I obviously can’t support,” Sununu said.
Manchester Sen. Lou D’Allesandro said, “I’m extremely disappointed that Family Medical Leave bill did not pass. The subject matter has been studied over and over again. It’s a very viable option and the way it has been structure is financially sound. Over 80 percent of those polled believe strongly in family medical leave. It’s a plus for our society and for the continued economic viability of businesses in the state. It’s something that will happen and the sooner the better.”
