Breathe NH Teams Up with Story Land to Tackle Asthma
Granite State Has 1 of the Highest Rates of Asthma in the U.S.
GLEN, NH—Story Land, the Granite State’s iconic amusement park, is partnering with Breathe New Hampshire and the New Hampshire Asthma Collaborative to shine a spotlight on asthma for two days, Saturday, June 1 and Sunday, June 2, at the park.
In New Hampshire, one in nine residents has asthma, and the rate of adult asthma is the highest in the U.S. The Asthma Awareness Days will feature education and resources on this chronic but manageable illness. Special accommodations will be made throughout the park from limited landscaping activity to making it completely smoke free.
Asthma is a chronic disease characterized by inflammation of the airways. Symptoms include coughing, tightness in the chest, wheezing, and trouble breathing that may be more prevalent early in the morning or at night. It may be triggered by allergies, a virus, smoke, or exercise.
It often starts in childhood but asthma can begin at any time. It is not contagious and can be managed by avoiding known triggers, and with medicine including prescription inhalers.
Since the Granite State has one of the highest rates of asthma in the U.S., according to Allyssa Thompson, Director of Programs for Breathe NH, “We’re excited to partner with Story Land to raise awareness and provide information and resources to help families better control asthma.”
Asthma is a leading cause of missed school and work days, and is the most common pediatric illness. More than 18,000 New Hampshire children have asthma.
“We love to accommodate all of our guests,” said Director of Marketing for Story Land, Lauren Hawkins.
The park will be completely smoke free and the landscaping schedule adapted to keep clippings to a minimum.
