Vehicle plunges into Merrimack River near Queen City Avenue

MANCHESTER, NH – A man was pulled from the wreckage after a vehicle veered off Route 293 North in Manchester in the area of Queen City Ave Friday morning and was submerged into the Merrimack River.

Manchester Fire, AMR ambulance and New Hampshire State Police received a call from a witness who said they saw a vehicle veer off the right side of 293, traveling through the wood-line and into the Merrimack River at about 6 a.m.

Companies initially had difficulty locating the vehicle, but eventually located the vehicle approximately 150 yards north of the reported location. Crews descended the riverbank to gain access to the vehicle; Rescue 1 launched two boats from Fisher Cats  Stadium boat launch and assisted crews with extrication. The vehicle had come to rest on its roof with the driver’s compartment submerged in water. The unconscious male occupant of the vehicle was extricated and CPR was initiated and was brought back to the launch by boat and transferred to AMR  for transport to the Elliot Hospital.

The condition of the man was not immediately known after transport, according Battalion Chief Ken Proulx.

Additional searches were done in the vehicle and in the river and no one else was located.

State Police and NH Department of Transportation remain at the scene, all lanes of travel are open. 

A heavy duty wrecker will work to remove the vehicle, and state police are continuing to investigate.
