MANCHESTER, NH – Elliot Health System recently introduced a groundbreaking procedure for shoulder surgery, performing the inaugural MAKO advanced robotic-assisted reverse shoulder surgery at its flagship Elliot Hospital based in Manchester. The procedure marks a milestone for Elliot as the first hospital in New Hampshire and also in Northern New England (NH, MA, ME, VT, RI) to offer the innovative capability.

“The innovative robotic-assisted approach and technology represent a significant step forward in surgical precision and patient-centered care by offering a greater level of surgical confidence” said Dr. Kevin Desrosiers, senior vice president and Chief Physician Executive of Elliot Health System. “It builds upon the nearly eight years of success of Elliot Orthopaedic Surgery Specialists, who have used MAKO technology to treat a variety of musculoskeletal conditions, beginning with the introduction of MAKO robotic assisted knee replacement capabilities in 2017 as the first system to offer the procedure in southern New Hampshire at the time.”

Since 2017, our orthopedic surgeons at Elliot Orthopaedic Surgery Specialists have performed 1,952 MAKO robotic-assisted joint replacement procedures, reflecting the depth of our surgical expertise, and the trust patients place in Elliot for advanced orthopedic surgical care. The recent inaugural procedure at Elliot Health System’s flagship, Elliot Hospital in Manchester, was performed in collaboration with Dr. Thomas Fortney, orthopedic surgeon and member of the Elliot Hospital medical staff.

“At Elliot Health System, we’re not just committed to investing in more comprehensive services that patients need from our clinical programs, we’re offering more intentional patient-centered care through higher-level surgical advancement and treatment capabilities,” said Dr. Greg Baxter, president and CEO of Elliot Health System. “By affording our patients the opportunity to receive more precise treatment for their specific orthopedic or musculoskeletal condition, we’re providing them with an overall improved experience with a higher likelihood of improved quality of life, health, and well-being. That’s our commitment as a regional healthcare leader and what it means to be your first choice to give and receive care.”

Robotic-assisted shoulder surgery uses 3D imaging and haptic guidance to help surgeons plan and execute procedures with a higher degree of accuracy. By creating a personalized surgical plan based on each patient’s unique anatomy, surgeons can achieve greater placement and maintain control throughout the procedure. This technology is designed to streamline workflows, simplify complex tasks, and support consistent outcomes.
