Astronomical April

April is packed with exciting astronomy events. With warmer weather drawing people outside, those venturing out after dark will have plenty to enjoy in the night sky. On April 1, the first night of the month will shine under the light of the Full Pink Moon. Despite its name, the moon wonโ€™t actually appear pink when it rises. According to the Old Farmerโ€™s Almanac, this moon marked the arrival of the โ€œmoss pinkโ€ (Phlox subulata), also known as wild ground phlox or creeping phloxโ€”one of the earliest wildflowers of spring. The Lyrid meteor shower will light up the sky on April 21-22, peaking the night before Earth Day. Itโ€™s the first big meteor show since early January, when the Quadrantids made a short but dazzling appearance. At its peak, you could see up to 20 meteors an hour, with the best viewing in the early hours of Wednesday, April 22, just before dawn. If clouds block the view, thereโ€™s still a good chance to catch more shooting stars the following night.

April 22, just a night after the Lyrids peak, the crescent moon will appear in the sky alongside Jupiter. This stunning pair will be visible in the western sky without the need for a telescope, even in brightly lit cities. Those with an unobstructed view of the horizon may also spot Venus near the constellation Orion shortly after nightfall.
