MANCHESTER, NH โ€“ย The Derryfield boys tennis team is one win away from a berth in the NHIAA Division-I championship match after dispatching Nashua South, 5-2, in the quarterfinal round of the state tournament Friday.

The third-seeded Cougars (13-2) now travel to face No. 2 Hanover in Tuesday’s semifinal at 4 p.m., with a spot in the state final on the line.

Derryfield’s quarterfinal victory was anything but conventional.

Play was halted following the completion of singles action Friday because of steady rainfall, forcing the match to be suspended until Monday. However, the contest never resumed, as No. 11 Nashua South was unable to field a complete lineup for the continuation, resulting in a forfeit and officially ending the Purple Panthers’ season.

โ€œWe battled really hard today,โ€ South head coach Brice Miller said. โ€œI think the guys today showed their determination, their โ€˜never give upโ€™ attitude that they showed throughout the season. They fought until the very end.โ€ย

The Cougars had already put themselves in a strong position before the weather intervened, building a 5-2 advantage through singles play and demonstrating the experience that helped produce a 12-2 regular season and a top-three tournament seed.

Now, Derryfield turns its attention to a Hanover squad that earned the No. 2 seed after an impressive regular season. The semifinal pits two of D-I’s strongest programs against one another, with both teams seeking a chance to compete for the state championship later this week.

The Cougars enter the matchup with momentum after advancing through the quarterfinals and will look to continue their postseason run against one of the division’s toughest opponents.

For Nashua South, the loss brought an end to a season that exceeded expectations. The Purple Panthers entered the tournament with a 5-9 record but stunned No. 6 Windham, 5-4, in the opening round for the program’s first playoff victory since 2023.

That upset was fueled by strong performances from sophomores Yuvanguru Balagurumoorthy and Pranav Udayakumar, along with freshman Akshar Ganta, a sign of the youthful core head coach Brice Miller believes can help the program continue to climb the Division I ranks in the coming seasons.

Now, however, the focus shifts to Tuesday’s semifinal showdown, where Derryfield will attempt to take the next step toward a Division I championship.ย
