Boomer Life: What’s in a name?

Even before the annual report of top names for 2022 was released by the Social Security Administration, I had been hearing names of youngsters that harkened back many decades: Evelyn, Hazel, Agnes, Dahlia, Lisbeth and Mae. Or Abraham, Archie, Bruno, Clark, Hunter.  What goes around comes around, I guess.

Word of the day: Mondegreen – A misheard song lyric

One of the most frequently misheard lyrics, this Elton John blooper has spawned a life of its own. For example, the single, which went three-times platinum in April 2018, spawned a joke on an episode of “Friends.” When discussing the most romantic songs of all time, Phoebe says that, in her opinion, it’s “the one that Elton John wrote for that guy on ‘Who’s the Boss’.”

Proud of my mother

You’re a Boomer and you may be a parent of an adult child or two. With all the things you’ve done with/for your children through the years, have you received any type of thanks or recognition from that adult child that, yes, you did a good job as a parent? You are someone they are proud of? You made a difference in their lives?

A tiptoe back to Saturday night ‘must see’ TV

As a kid, I didn’t realize how the issues it touched had been considered so unsuitable for a U.S. television comedy — racism, antisemitism, infidelity, homosexuality, women’s liberation, rape, religion, miscarriage, abortion, breast cancer, the Vietnam War, menopause, and impotence. Yes, it was the values of the Greatest Generation vs. those of the Baby Boomers.

At first, I observed small tattoos appearing as butterflies or flowers at the ankle, below the naval (which I didn’t see unless on the beach), or on the shoulder, typically disguised by clothing except perhaps during the summer. Now it seems, elaborate tattoos are planned well in advance, intricate elaborate color drawings not just limited to those unseen areas; think a sleeve of tattoos, elaborate tattoos scenes on the back and elsewhere, the EKG of someone close to them, children’s names, and even pictures of beloved dogs or cats.

Rescuing memories: From VHS to DVD, hoping my kids may one day appreciate my efforts

One day I took them out of the box (I probably had a better use for the box) and took a good look at them. The labels were barely legible or crossed off with something else written on top. I had to blow off the dust. What to do with them? Can’t just throw them out — could I?

The visual stories of our lives

I took my first black-and-white photos with a Brownie camera where you looked down at the lens to see your subject; and you even had to insert and roll the 110 film inside the camera in the dark. I wasn’t alone. Millions of Brownie cameras were sold to a hungry consumer population.

Start your engines: Push the button!

Which got me to thinking — what goes around comes around, be it in fashion, food, hairstyles, cars. Now, as my husband pointed out to me, the engines of cars from the 1960s started in a very different manner than cars today. Even though I understand that fact, I couldn’t help but recall that the 1960 Rambler I learned to drive in and the 2019 Honda CRV both started with a push to a button. The Rambler needed an actual key in the ignition; the CRV needs the key FOB close by. It gave me a sort of “back to the future” moment.

Over the decades, I have heard the back-and-forth of people preferring the “Merry Christmas” greeting. I see my friends eagerly (or with great stress) preparing for Christmas Day and the days surrounding it as both a religious celebration and one that brings family and friends — and even strangers— together to bring joy and light to the season. It is indeed a happy and merry time of year.
