For those who knew and loved Bill Cashin, word of his passing Friday moved like a wave of sorrow through the city. Cashin served the city for more than three decades as an alderman –recognized as the longest sitting Alderman – and remained an active part of city life until his health began to decline. He died Thursday at the age of 85.

The word was delivered by Manchester police officers on behalf of Firestone Complete Auto Care, 300 Elm St., which in a corporate statement released Thursday said there has been an “uptick of trespassing” at the Elm Street property and that the company is working with the city police department “to resolve the trespassing issue and ensure our store, employees, and customers remain safe and secure.”

Cost-cutting measures within Manchester School District have forced Central High School’s administration to make a tough call. The stately  “classical building” at Beech and Lowell, which opened in 1897, has served the city well and far outlived the usual lifespan of a turn-of-the-century building. On Thursday, news circulated among Central High School staff that it would likely be the end of an era, with the proposed closure of the building.
