Many New Hampshire school special education departments are anticipating an increase in pre-school age students with more severe needs than in past years and are attributing it to families not accessing early intervention services during the pandemic.
Republican lawmakers are seeking to expand the eligibility for the state’s Education Freedom Accounts program that allows lower-income students to use state dollars for non-public types of education, including private and parochial schools.
Cam Wallace, 18, is a Kearsarge Regional High School senior and a student intern for the organization Safe Schools New Hampshire. In January, Wallace plans to make a presentation to his teachers and administrators at a Kearsarge Regional staff meeting about ideas for peer support programs that could help fellow students who struggle with mental health. The idea is to have a team of trained students who can recognize warning signs and reach out to those who are struggling, and connect them with the resources they need.
“I felt like there are other people facing the same struggles that I face, whether it’s language or religion or if someone faces any kind of discrimination in their life, I’m not alone and I’m included in this club.”
While New Hampshire colleges and universities are gearing up for a continued COVID-19 pandemic with a mix of online and in-person classes this fall, a new rule from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement means international students can’t remain in the U.S. while attending school only online.
