One month to the day after Dr. Martin Coster performed the surgery that saved his eyesight, Phil, the cat has been adopted, according to Rob Halpin, spokesman for MSPCA-Angell.
Phil, the homeless kitten, was born without upper eyelids, meaning he could not blink and lubricate his eyes, according to Rob Halpin of MSPCA-Angell. (The medical name for this congenital defect is agenesis, Halpin said.) Apart from causing eye irritation, Phil’s condition, if untreated, would lead to blindness.

The treatment at Angell Animal Medical Center works by wrapping a laser around the tumor “so tightly that it destroys cancer cells without affecting nearby tissues,” Halpin said, meaning vets can blast through tumors aggressively without worrying about side effects damaging nearby vital organs, like the brain or the eyes.
These dogs “have never stepped on the ground, felt the rain or the sunshine or the grass beneath their paws,” Campbell said. They’re scared at first. But they spend three weeks in foster homes where the other pets show them the ropes, including the basics about eating from a bowl, sleeping in a bed and going outside to do business.
