Richard Newton, 40, of Manchester, was identified as the victim by NH State Police.

Three lanes of travel were shut down for approximately 2 hours while Troopers processed the scene. The entire interstate was shut down for approximately 1 hour to allow the Medivac helicopter to land and trasport one of the drivers.

State Police are investigating why the driver veered off the road causing his car to flip over.

The truck driver told police he had an “intense coughing fit” which resulted in him losing control and crashing into the median, overturning his truck and dumping his load of lumber.

Londonderry Fire and EMS responded to the crash scene and the highway was fully shut down for approximately 20 minutes while those involved were evaluated and witnesses interviewed.

A wrong-way driver was allegedly impaired and transporting drugs when he was arrested early Monday morning, pulled over by State Police who helped avert any accidents with a quick response.

Preliminary investigation shows that for a reason not yet known to authorities, the man ran into the roadway and was struck by a pick-up truck pulling a commercial trailer. The operator of the pick-up Mark Furrow, 46, ofNew Britain, CT, remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators.

Due a a fuel spill following the crash, police closed a section of Route 101 for several hours to allow for clean up.

Operators are reminded to reduce their speed when temperatures are below freezing and driving conditions are poor. This simple precaution may save their lives and those of others.

The accident closed Route 101 for several hours Thursday night.
