Ode to Chelsea Paolini, whose shining light burned out too soon

The last time I saw Chelsea Paolini was in the parking lot at WKXL in Concord two summers back.  She had just done a performance on Granite State of Mind and was ripping on a bowl of smoke before her ride back to Dover.  The video attached to this story is of that performance.  And as you can see, Chelsea is on her game, looking strong, tanned and present, belting out an original, as she always did.

There are a number of things I hate about COVID-19 but my inability to whiff No. 2 ain’t one of them

Losing my sense of smell has been delightful. Yes, it has.  I don’t need to smell. I’ve come to grips with it. And there was little internal wrestling involved. I bowed immediately, pledging my devotion to the consequences – if one chooses to call it that.  In fact, I’d be okay if I never smell anything or anyone ever again.

Trump is no gangster. Let’s get that straight. If he wasn’t President and insulated and you were able to get up into his face, he would 100 percent crawl into his fat neck and hide from a real fight. That’s the man Don Trump is.  He’s no tough guy, and I doubt he has either ever thrown a punch or taken one to the face in his life.

At least that’s what the bands paying tribute to AC/DC this Saturday at the Rex Theatre hope to witness from the stage.  The Jonny Friday Band will join forces with The Graniteers for a slew of deep cuts and hits from each era of the band.  Songs like “Shoot To Thrill,” “Thunderstruck” and “Whole Lotta A Rosie” are on the docket to be played.

Volume 5 of “Poets on the Loose” is upon us, and, what would a poetry series be without the likes of a true Beat poet, someone who has published and recorded poetry, someone who sets his poetic lyrics to music and someone who, for a whole lifetime, has embodied the poetic life?

At least that’s the case with Jen Whit, a dearly missed singer/songwriter from Canterbury, who, for a number of years, could be seen in the bars and clubs on the regular, mesmerizing us with her voice and wonderful guitar playing.  Whit was legit.  A goddess when it comes to singing, someone who could vibe with all kinds of music – rock, ’90s pop, folk, country.

When your country’s on fire, doing the wrong thing is the same as fanning the flames

As the impending doom which Trump was aware had already arrived on our shores and was already raining down on our country (we just didn’t know it), well, the Big Dorito decided as the President of the United States of America that the best move he could make was to pacify us, play us for infants, as inferiors, or, as he said, because he didn’t want to panic the country.

My brief, imaginary brush with COVID-19, or, get tested; sure it sucks, but well worth it

The city of Manchester sent an email out to everyone who attended one of the high school graduations at Fisher Cat Stadium, suggesting we all get tested for COVID. I was at the stadium with about a thousand others, give or take, watching our kids walk the plank into mini-adulthood.  But, the city suggested we all get tested and it was FREE so, what the hell, you’re speaking my language.  I bit.

In truth, today I’m not just a reporter but I’m also a proud parent of one of the graduates, my daughter Danielle.  I can say that I’m no more proud of my daughter graduating with the Class of 2020 than I was when she finally let go of my hand without crying and walked herself into kindergarten (on the fifth day) at Smyth Road School. Thirteen years ago.
