When New Hampshire lawmakers get to work this week to open the 2023 legislative session, they’ll have plenty to keep them busy. Their major task over the next six months will be to pass a new two-year state budget — something that could be especially challenging given the narrow political margin in the House this year. But there are plenty of other policy issues that will demand lawmakers’ attention. Here’s an overview of some of them.

“We’re trying to do everything we can in the immediate. We feel a great sense of urgency. It’s heartbreaking and upsetting. Every time something happens like it has been here in the past week, it’s unbelievably heartbreaking for those of us working on this issue. We can’t get there fast enough and we don’t want anyone to suffer that way. There should be no deaths. That’s unacceptable,” says Adrienne Beloin, Director of Homeless Initiatives.

“Although New Hampshire has an overall low homicide rate, it continues to be concerning that the majority of homicides in the state are domestic violence related,” Alyssa Dandrea, community relations specialist at the New Hampshire Coalition Against Sexual and Domestic Violence said. “All domestic violence homicides are avoidable.”
