Juneteenth, a mash-up of the words “June” and “Nineteenth,” was celebrated this year in front of the Hopknot on Elm Street. A sizeable crowd, among them Mayor Joyce Craig, gathered in the shade to eat gourmet pretzels, swill drinks and listen to various black activists and community members share their experiences and stories.

From all of this comes a young intelligent woman who you can describe as a worker, mother, and now activist that has made a positive stir in her community to change the status quo and make life better for herself, her family, and for all others who feel silenced and want change.  Her name is Latoya Fletcher.  She was able to discuss with me one afternoon how this all started for her and gave me an insight into her life growing up as a black woman and what this movement means to her.

Throughout the pandemic, Great North Aleworks in Manchester has weathered the storm fairly well, compared to smaller brewers who rely heavily on taproom sales, because the business model has leaned largely on wholesale, according to the owners. But the taproom has continued to keep patrons connected through virtual events, and with a few recent upgrades, is better positioned for reopening.

The wedding couple and their parents along with important guests are also planned for the foreground and the dozens of other guests will be spread across the background. So, along these lines, perhaps one way to increase the impact of traditionally underrepresented voices in any community is to find and create more opportunities for cultivating appreciation and celebration of everyone. Men associating themselves with the movement have been making news as the country has erupted into protests over the Minneapolis police killing of George Floyd, and African American with arrests of armed Boogaloo adherents in Las Vegas and in Colorado in recent days. Boogaloo Bois, as they are called, have even been spotted at the State House during the protests over Gov. Chris Sununu’s stay at home orders to control the COVID-19 pandemic.

You don’t need TV financial analysts to tell you what your wallet has been feeling:  the steady climb of food prices since the onset of Covid-19.  Just last week, the U.S. Department of Labor reported that April saw the biggest one month increase at the nation’s grocery stores since 1974; a 4.3 percent increase in meat, poultry, fish and eggs, and a 7 percent across the board increase in all departments since this time last year.
