For some reason, the news of Bill Withers’s death moved me with unexpected emotion and after informing a friend of the unfortunate news, he had the same reaction. I decided to put aside the day’s tasks, for the time being, plugging in earbuds, to learn why.
I first met Tomie dePaola, the way I imagine most people did, through his illustrations and books. Strega Nona and Big Anthony came to life for my kids and more recently for my grand-kids. The kindly every-person’s Italian grandma. Loving and feisty with an always-full-magic pot of pasta. Of course, she had to save her small town from being overrun by pasta when Big Anthony did what any little child could imagine doing — misusing the witch’s magic and getting into trouble.
Matbah specializes in Ottoman-Turkish cuisine but, as its head chef Zeki Polatkesen boasts, Matbah is only 65 percent Turkish. Other influences come from French, Italian, and Arab cuisines, to name a few.
If director Quentin Tarantino was in need of a consultant for his latest film, “Once Upon A Time in Hollywood,” he could’ve easily consulted with Mary Anne Barothy as a first-hand resource. Not only did the midwestern born Barothy meet her long time idol, international superstar Doris Day, for four years she lived in Day’s home as her private secretary, sharing Day’s tragedies, triumphs and intimate moments.
In response to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, makerspaces across the state have mobilized an effort to manufacture protective face shields for health care workers, Roy Schlieben, executive director of MAxT Makerspace in Peterborough, said on Monday.
In addition to writing and illustrating children’s books, dePaola taught for several years in art and theater departments in colleges in California, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire.

Just a few days after the depressing reality of cancelled shows happened, Studio Labs & Events United hosted one of the largest live streaming events in the history of the industry. On St. Patrick’s Day, the Drop Kick Murphy’s performed their annual free concert from Studio Lab in a streaming event that brought in approximately 10 million viewers and united a country for a moment of community and happy distraction in a week of palpable anxiety and uncertainty.

Each caller was candid about how they’re managing life during the musical drought inspired by the Coronavirus. Some were more upbeat than others. Some hid the despair better than others. And some just didn’t give a fuck. Instead of taking a mental pounding from the fear and consternation, they just started writing new songs, they said, peeling through the unfinished numbers and piecing that shit together. Hit the ground running with a new bag of tricks when life resumes, which, by all indications by our President, you’ll be back to work before the big spike hits.
While waiting for COVID-19 to subside and get back to the business of opening the Golden Corral, Lenny and Nancy Abreu are ready to serve Manchester’s first-responders with delivery of meals from Nancy’s Diner in Nashua.
Under Governor Sununu’s Executive Order #2, all on-site dining in the state of New Hampshire is prohibited until April 6. However, many of Manchester’s restaurants are adapting to meet the times. Manchester Ink Link reached out to dozens of these restaurants to see if they’re open or closed, how customers can get their food, if they’ve modified their hours or menus, and any other pertinent information we could dig up.
A working musician, unlike other musicians with full-time jobs, are the ones who’ve thrown caution to the wind and listened to their muse, believed in it, followed it, believed in their own craft, in themselves, believed in you, the listeners, hoping that you would believe in them and help keep the dream alive. And the bills paid.
It’s going to be a challenge having our entire world upended over the course of the next few weeks or quite possibly months. While we cannot claim that all of these suggestions will work for you, your family and/or your situation, perhaps one or two can help make a not so great situation a bit more bearable.
So, for now, it’s up to us! If you want to make sure your favorite brewery or meadery is able to keep its lights on, then go buy some beer and mead directly from the makers.
Thank you for your understanding, we appreciate your support and patronage of Jupiter Hall and we look forward to seeing you at future events.
Lenny Abreu and Steve Leary are among those too busy with the task at hand – construction of a 344-seat buffet restaurant on South Willow Street – to get caught up in the negative side of the news.
