$20K grant from Mary Gale Foundation to support homebound seniors through CareGivers program

“This grant opens the door for even more women to get connected to the support they need to remain safe and independent at home.”

MANCHESTER, NH – Catholic Charities NH, the state’s largest human services organization, has received a $20,000 grant from the Mary Gale Foundation to support its CareGivers program.

The grant will provide essential services for low-income women age 65 and older in Greater Manchester, many of whom are facing social isolation and challenges navigating daily life. The Catholic Charities NH program offers rides to medical appointments, monthly food deliveries and emotional support, helping seniors who are homebound or disabled maintain their independence and continue living safely at home.

“We are incredibly grateful to Granite United Way and the Mary Gale Foundation for their commitment to serving our state’s aging population,” said James Wilkie, Executive Director of CareGivers. “These are incredibly difficult times for many local seniors, who are often forced to choose between essentials like food, medical care and keeping the lights on. This grant opens the door for even more women to get connected to the support they need to remain safe and independent at home.”

According to the National Institute on Aging, social isolation and loneliness increase the risk of cognitive decline, anxiety, depression, heart disease, weakened immune systems, and other conditions. CareGivers services reduce food insecurity, strengthen social connection, and allow seniors to free up financial resources to afford other essentials. 97% of CareGivers clients report an improved quality of life, while 92% say they are better able to afford prescriptions, utilities, and other essentials. All CareGivers services are provided at no cost and are funded through grants and private contributions.

The Mary Gale Foundation is a private, grantmaking foundation administered through Granite United Way. Established in 1876, it supports housing, health and other in-home services and programs for low-income women age 65 and older living in the Greater Manchester area.
