CONCORD, NH โ A scam is circulating involving calls from people saying they are from your utility company, demanding immediate payment over the phone or loss of service.
Attorney General Joseph A. Foster and the Public Utilities Commissionโs Director ofย Consumer Affairs Amanda O. Noonan warn New Hampshire utility customers about the scam, currently operating in the state.
A number of consumers have complained of receiving calls fromย individuals pretending to be with the customerโs utility company, including someone falsely saying they’re from Eversource.
The caller tells the customerย that he or she has a past due balance on their utility account and then threatens the customer withย disconnection of their utility service unless they pay that delinquent amount.
These calls are not coming from New Hampshire utility companies. Utility customersย who are scheduled for disconnection due to nonpayment receive written notice a minimum of 14ย days prior to any proposed disconnection date and the notice includes action they can take toย maintain service.
Consumers receiving these types of calls should not provide any type of financialย information to the caller, including credit card or bank account information, and should not makeย any payment. Calls should be reported to the Public Utilities Commission at 1-800-852-3793.ย Consumers can also call the Attorney Generalโs Consumer Hotline at 1-888-468-4454.
