MANCHESTER, NH — A man found sitting in a stranger’s car at 3 a.m. on the West Side was arrested and charged with theft and prowling, and a woman found with him was charged with prowling.
Police say Robert McCann, 25, of Manchester, and Heather Aikens, 25, of Allenstown, may also be responsible for other car break-ins.
Manchester Police Officer Eric Tracy responded to the area Wilkins Street, off Rockland Avenue in the City’s West Side neighborhood for a possible car break in early June 25. Officer Tracy drove down Wilkins Street toward Warner Street when he observed a man seated in a 2009 Honda Civic. He also observed a woman walking away from the area as he began conversing with the man in the Honda.
Officer Tracy approached the man, later identified as McCann, who immediately told police he was there visiting a friend and claimed to know the owner of the vehicle.
Officer Tracy felt McCann was being less than truthful, so he made contact with the owner of the car. The owner, who resides on Warner Street, told the officer she did not know McCann. The owner also stated she was missing “loose change” from her center console.
McCann was found to be in possession of not only loose change, but a mechanics screwdriver as well as a leatherman (multi-purpose) tool inside of a backpack. Based on the fact he had no legitimate propose to be in a stranger’s vehicle, he was taken into custody. He was charged with possession of burglary tools, a misdemeanor; theft from a motor vehicle; and loitering/prowling.
Officer Dan Wood arrived as back-up and spoke to the woman who was walking nearby while Officer Tracy investigated McCann’s alibi. She identified herself as Heather Aikens, 25, of Allenstown. Police determined she had no legitimate reason to be in the area, either, so she was arrested and charged with loitering/prowling.
Police say the two may have been involved in additional car break-ins in the neighborhood. Anyone who may have been victimized should contact the Manchester Police Department and file a police report.
Both appeared in the 9th Circuit Court-Manchester on June 25.
