MANCHESTER, NH — A fire at a six-family apartment building on Central Street was evacuated Tuesday due to a kitchen fire.
At 8:37 a.m. fire crews were dispatched to 322 Central St. where a third-floor apartment was filling with smoke, which was venting from the second and third floors as well as the attic.
A hose line was advanced to the second floor where a kitchen/dining area was fully involved in fire and spreading to adjacent rooms and apartments.
After extinguishing the primary fire, crews opened up walls in adjacent areas to get to remaining fire that was consuming the building in void spaces.
Not all occupants had exited the building at the time firefighters arrived, and some were sleeping or unaware of the fire. They were alerted to the fire and evacuated, along with some pets.
One cat was rescued from the apartment of the fire’s origin by firefighters and in respiratory distress. The cat was given oxygen on the scene and transported to a local emergency veterinary hospital. The cat is expected to survive. One resident who was alerted and evacuated from the fire was able to save a pet ferret.
