MANCHESTER, NH – A heavy dump of rain during a fast and furious thunder storm Tuesday afternoon has created several water-related problems around the city, and forced road closures for safety reasons due to flash flooding.
Just before 1:30 p.m. Manchester Police announced closures at Bridge and Elm streets as well as the area around 434 Smyth Road. Also, police cautioned that there was flooding on North River Road, and ask motorists to proceed with caution.
Several manhole covers have been displaced due to the high water table, so motorists should use caution with approaching any manhole cover on the road, as they could present a “major hazard,” according to Lt. Brian O’Keefe.
- Police diverted eastbound traffic on Bridge Street to Lowell Street due to flooding, according to Lt. Brian O’Keefe.
- North and Union streets flooded, with Engine 6 from Manchester Fire Department clearing drains and assisting a mail carrier stranded in a van
- Elm and Clark streets – Tree down on car
- Carpenter Street, a tree down near North Bay Street
- Carpenter and Chestnut, electrical issues – Eversource on the scene
- North Bay Street – a downed tree on a power line
- Manchester Fire dispatch was fielding lots of calls for “water problems with electrical hazard” around the city, including concerns over the roof at Strange Brew, and water coming into a home in the North End through the electrical box.
