MILFORD, NH — The Animal Rescue League of New Hampshire (ARLNH) has taken in 18 rabbits following the discovery of a backyard breeding operation in Milford where the animals were found living in unsafe and unsanitary conditions.
The rabbits were being housed in makeshift outdoor enclosures that offered little protection from the elements and left them vulnerable to predators, harsh weather, and injury. The animals were reportedly being sold for $20 each as pets or for food.
“Every animal deserves compassion, care, and a safe environment,” said Marianne Jones, CEO.“We’re committed to giving these rabbits the second chance they deserve.”
Upon intake at the ARLNH, staff and veterinarians discovered that many of the rabbits were suffering from serious health concerns, including skin mites, ear mites, and severe upper respiratory infections, conditions that can cause significant pain and even become life-threatening if left untreated.

This case underscores the dangers of unregulated breeding operations and highlights the importance of obtaining pets through reputable shelters or breeders. It also demonstrates the vital role animal welfare organizations play in rescuing and rehabilitating animals in crisis.
“Some people may be adopting these bunnies thinking they’ll make great family pets,” said Dr. Magnarelli, Chief Medical Officer.”Unfortunately in this case they brought home animals that are carrying mites and may be suffering from upper respiratory infections. These illnesses not only lead to costly veterinary care, but they also pose a risk to other pets in the household and can be fatal if left untreated. That’s why it’s critical for anyone considering a new pet to ensure they’re coming from a reputable and responsible source.”
The Animal Rescue League of New Hampshire is now providing critical medical care and rehabilitation to the rescued rabbits, with the goal of eventually placing them into safe, loving homes once they have fully recovered.
