CONCORD,ย NH โ The New Hampshire Departmentย of Health and Human Services (DHHS) will coordinate a count to identify theย numberย ofย homelessย individualsย inย Newย Hampshire.
The DHHS Bureau ofย Homelessย and Housing Services (BHHS), together with service providers thatย serveย homelessย individualsย andย families,ย willย reportย theย numberย ofย shelteredย andย unshelteredย personsย forย aย 24-hourย period.ย Thisย isย aย coordinatedย effortย betweenย the three local homeless Continuums of Care โย Greaterย ย Nashua,ย Manchesterย andย theย โBalanceย ofย State,โย whichย BHHSย coordinates.
โThisย countย isย intendedย toย beย aย snapshotย ofย howย manyย peopleย are
experiencingย homelessness on any given day in New Hampshire,โ said Maureen
Ryan,ย BHHSย Administrator.ย โIt is based on information reported from city
andย townย welfare offices, homeless shelters, police and fire departments,
faithย basedย organizations,ย outreachย workers, the 2-1-1 Call Center, and
other organizations serving people experiencing homelessness in the State.โ
Inย Januaryย 2015, New Hampshire reported 2,158 homeless individuals across
theย State. Of that number, 1,370 were sheltered, 262 were unsheltered, and
526ย individualsย wereย doubledย upย (temporarilyย residingย with family or
friends).
Anย accurate unduplicated count is required by the US Department of Housing
andย Urbanย Developmentย and is essential in DHHSโs efforts to obtain funds
that directly benefit individuals and families experiencing homelessness or
at risk of becoming homeless in New Hampshire.
