CONCORD, NH – The New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) will coordinate a count to identify the number of homeless individuals in New Hampshire.
The DHHS Bureau of Homeless and Housing Services (BHHS), together with service providers that serve homeless individuals and families, will report the number of sheltered and unsheltered persons for a 24-hour period. This is a coordinated effort between the three local homeless Continuums of Care – Greater Nashua, Manchester and the “Balance of State,” which BHHS coordinates.
“This count is intended to be a snapshot of how many people are
experiencing homelessness on any given day in New Hampshire,” said Maureen
Ryan, BHHS Administrator. “It is based on information reported from city
and town welfare offices, homeless shelters, police and fire departments,
faith based organizations, outreach workers, the 2-1-1 Call Center, and
other organizations serving people experiencing homelessness in the State.”
In January 2015, New Hampshire reported 2,158 homeless individuals across
the State. Of that number, 1,370 were sheltered, 262 were unsheltered, and
526 individuals were doubled up (temporarily residing with family or
friends).
An accurate unduplicated count is required by the US Department of Housing
and Urban Development and is essential in DHHS’s efforts to obtain funds
that directly benefit individuals and families experiencing homelessness or
at risk of becoming homeless in New Hampshire.
