MANCHESTER, NH — It’s been nearly two years since a group of residents came together to fix what was broken. Valley Volunteers have made it their mission to correct the years of neglect and vandalism at Valley Cemetery, and their mission continues.
Valley Cemetery Restoration 2019
2019 efforts to take back Valley Cemetery!
The weather last summer didn’t do us any favors, but we continued progress in cutting away areas where people were tucking in to do drugs, clearing lines of site to the valley floor, and opening paths that we were surprised to find existed!
The focus at Valley Cemetery this year is continued cutting and clearing of overgrowth, maintenance of paths to prep for a marked mile, and prep of chapel for restoration efforts.
In 2017 we started efforts on the Auburn Street and north/northeast side of the valley basin. In 2018 we knocked it out on the east side, freeing chapel and Smyth from years of overgrowth. This year we are focusing on the west side of the Valley, directly across from Smyth and Chapel. We’ve got a lot of cutting to do to open the space to make the area less inviting to campers.
Lights! I have finally seen an initial plan for lighting in Valley Cemetery so we can have the space lit at night. We are waiting to see how many lights will be approved for final planning. I’ll keep you posted.
Let’s do this!
