#BagtheButts2018 on Earth Day with downtown cleanup

MANCHESTER, NH – Because cigarette butts are the world’s greatest environmental litter problem, taking years to decompose and containing toxic chemicals, Breathe New Hampshire sponsors an annual Bag the Butts clean-up effort. Held every year around Earth Day in April, this initiative encourages volunteers to clean up school and work campuses, neighborhoods, parks and waterfronts by providing free toolkits.

Join Breathe New Hampshire and sponsor NH Tobacco Prevention & Cessation Program (@NHPub) at Veteran’s Memorial Park anytime between noon and 4 p.m. on Friday, April 13. Breathe NH will provide all the tools you need to clean up the park. Call 603-669-2411, email info@BreatheNH.org to sign up, or see www.BreatheNH.org.

Cigarette butts have filters that look like cotton but are actually thin plastic fibers that can take up to 10 years to decompose. Butts contain toxins that are not only unsightly, they’re dangerous to kids and wildlife. The collected butts will be sent to a company for recycling.

Breathe NH’s Bag the Butts is a statewide initiative to raise awareness about the environmental impact of cigarette litter, and educate people about the risks of tobacco use. Each year almost 2,000 lives in the Granite State are lost due to smoking. The NH Tobacco Prevention & Cessation Program is a partner in this effort; see www.QuitNowNH.org. #BagtheButts2018.

Anytime is a great time to help the environment! Want to start your own Bag the Butts team in your neighborhood, at your workplace, school campus, or park?
