Three days after opening an emergency winter shelter at the West Side senior center the city’s Director of Emergency Operations announced that the city will be evacuating the sidewalk encampment that has mushroomed around the Families in Transition shelter in the coming week.

Kimberly Drohan has spent the past decade serving the city’s most senior citizens at the William Cashin Senior Activity Center on the West Side. As Senior Center Manager, she and two other staff members manage the flow of some 150 seniors who come through daily for exercise classes, socializing and special events. She objects to the city’s plan to open the Cashin center as an emergency overnight shelter. After listening to the Board of Aldermen discuss the plan during Tuesday’s meeting Drohan spent the night tossing and turning, then penned a letter expressing her reservations.

A teenager, identified as Mischa Fay, was shot and killed during a 911 call. Formella says the 17-year-old was armed with a knife and when officers entered the home, one officer discharged a taser while another officer discharged a firearm. The teen sustained a single gunshot wound to the chest and was pronounced dead a short time later.

“We’re trying to do everything we can in the immediate. We feel a great sense of urgency. It’s heartbreaking and upsetting. Every time something happens like it has been here in the past week, it’s unbelievably heartbreaking for those of us working on this issue. We can’t get there fast enough and we don’t want anyone to suffer that way. There should be no deaths. That’s unacceptable,” says Adrienne Beloin, Director of Homeless Initiatives.

Despite explanations from two different state police departments and two neighboring city government officials, it’s still hard to fathom why a homeless woman from Maine was driven 60 miles south by Sanford Police to a homeless shelter in Manchester, where there was no bed waiting for her.
