To screen or not to screen? That is the question facing parents and educators across the country.
The application deadline for this year’s WiT program is September 17, so time is fleeting. I would encourage any female student with a love of math and science to learn more about this program and to consider applying.
Education funding is one of several issues on which the Governor and Legislature disagreed, but there is a lot of common ground. I am confident our elected officials will be able to hammer out a budget agreement.
It is unclear how the new SAT scores would affect a student’s chances of getting into college. These scores are based on where a student lives and the school they attend, not on the individual. Should students in some towns even take the SAT? These changes add ambiguity and anxiety to an already complicated college admissions process.
There is growing disparity in student performance. Students who come from economically advantaged homes regularly outperform economically disadvantaged students. This is not a new development. It has been persistent for decades. What is alarming is that the disparity is growing. The very education system that is supposed to be the great equalizer is, in fact, becoming the great divider.
States are hiring consulting firms to turnaround low performing schools and less than 5 percent of those firms have actually demonstrated that they have ever successfully done the work.
Securing important and sensitive data in our schools is the natural and expected response to the on-going modernization of our schools and learning systems.
