United Therapeutics is in the amazement business. Its 950 employees are spread between corporate offices in Silver Spring, Maryland, and North Carolina’s Research Triangle, with additional research labs in Quebec, Florida and California. In Manchester, 3D lungs and kidneys are being printed and their website lists 13 current job openings for various scientists and research assistants.

Whole Lotta Hittin’ Goin’ On: Starting with Star Wars night at Delta Dental on July 23, The Fisher Cats bats went on an eight-game tear during which they went 6-2. Their 40 round-trippers for the month of July are believed to be a franchise record. Was the harbinger the lack of a Wookie of the Year in the 96-degree heat? Just too darn hot to don a Chewbacca suit.

ART NABE (think “neighborhood”) is being hosted July 15-17 by BLKSHE, a multidisciplinary art haus constructing narratives of creative freedom with no bounds. Manchester’s YWCA will be the site for a pop-up arts market featuring Asian, Black, Hispanic, Latino and other locally underrepresented small business owners and creatives.

At the turn of the millennium, I was working with local teens at risk through a two-year grant administered by Franconia Notch University.* These were tough kids – butane huffers, illiterates, tempest-tossed, just plain tossed out like so much refuse. Our primary work was to mend a thousand traumas as best we could and to point these kids in the right direction before they were forever lost.
