The city’s annual Memorial Day Parade is a time for the community to gather and remember in their own way the many men and women who have served and sacrificed their lives as an act of love and duty to our country.
Senator Hassan began by saying, “ On Memorial Day, we honor the heroes who gave their lives for our country, who gave up everything just so that others, people whom they never met, could live in freedom. With their sacrifice, they purchased for us not only freedom from tyranny and the freedom to live in a democracy, but also the freedom to experience a multitude of life’s ordinary moments
Memorial Day is important, to be sure, but our reverence shouldn’t be confined to a single day. Every American has a duty to ensure that our country is ever worthy of the sacrifices that our fallen service members made for us. That includes paying tribute to those we have lost.
On Memorial Day, If you want to know the true context of the meaning of sacrifice, “you should head to and read some of the Congressional Medal of Honor citations” says my friend Mike Porcelli, an army veteran and chief of staff of The Gold Shield, a nationwide membership organization dedicated to helping veterans with PTSD and cancer.
Maybe it’s just that I’m far less interested in the waving flags and speeches than I am in the stories. Maybe I’d rather put a microphone on the lapel of some of these folks while they are still alive than to salute their gravestone after they have passed. Maybe we should ask “How do you feel?” instead of “How did you fight?”
There are a number of 21-gun salutes planned around the city on May 28 between 8 – 11 a.m.
