As a tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy of service to others, City Year considers MLK Day as a day “on,” not a day ”off.” That’s why, on each Martin Luther King Jr. Day, City Year annually mobilizes its 3,000 AmeriCorps members –and thousands more volunteers – for a day of service in communities across the nation.
Paul Doolittle, a community activist from Derry, will receive the 2016 Martin Luther King Award on January 18 at the 34th annual Martin Luther King Day Community Celebration being held at Saint George Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Manchester.
Members of the Manchester Police Department’s Vista Program (Volunteers in Service to America) have placed a collection box in the main lobby of Police Headquarters, 405 Valley St., as part of the VISTA special day of service MLK Day Projects, honoring the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The MLK Day celebration at Saint George Greek Orthodox Cathedral also includes an awards ceremony, remarks from Governor Maggie Hassan, live music and food.
The judges felt that Nikita’s art piece expressed an understanding of the power of standing together to “grow” from negativity. The depiction of a flower with incomplete petals indicates that Nikita understands that the work is not done, that today’s children must create a positive environment, in spite of historic negativity.
